Reflections – Plant maintenance and Life maintenance

Maintenance Is Everything

Maintenance is not just a technical requirement in industry. It is a fundamental discipline of life.

In a good manufacturing operation, maintenance goes far beyond equipment. It includes the workforce: keeping skills sharp, morale high, and standards consistent. Good maintenance protects performance, ensures quality, controls costs, and prevents small problems from becoming expensive disasters.

Preventive Maintenance (PMs) are the key. Just like a plant where operators and leaders must regularly talk to maintenance techs to catch issues early, the same is true in life. If you do not do the PMs, quality time with family, meaningful conversations, vacations, and relationship maintenance, gaps open and things eventually fail.

PM frequency changes based on conditions and age of equipment. The same is true for us. When life brings more stress, we need more frequent PMs, more intentional time with family, more honest conversations, and more deliberate rest and reconnection.

We all know this. Yet many organizations treat maintenance as an afterthought until something breaks. The same pattern appears in homes and communities where neglect slowly takes over.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Benjamin Franklin

The skills you learn in a well run industrial environment transfer directly to life: preventive care, attention to detail, pride in ownership, and the discipline to fix things before they break.

The best leaders and the best citizens understand this. Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is noble. It is the quiet work that separates sustainable success from eventual collapse.

How well are you doing your PMs at work and at home, especially during high stress periods?

I would love to hear your thoughts.
